A memory of a trip to O' Grove Fishing Village in Galicia, Spain: A community on a river estuary and a perfect place for mussel, oyster farming and tourism.
Tour boats take visitors behind the scenes of shellfish farming and serve copies quantities of mussels and local wine. They are excellent value and a popular tourist attraction.
Mussel farming begins by gathering baby mussels (seeds), which cling to rocks on shallow waters. The seeds are folded onto ropes, that are hung from rafts, with a fine rayon netting that decomposes within a few days. They take about 4 to 6 months to grow to a size where they may be split into several ropes. Each seed rope can produce from 2 to 4 new splittings. On average a seed rope can be split into 3 mussel growing ropes at this stage.
O' Grove is located on the Ría de Arousa estuary, the largest of the estuaries in Galicia. The river Umia running into the sea helps circulation and flush in the mussel farming area. It is helps creates\ a rich growing area full of nutrients.
